Couches are furniture pieces designed to seat two or more people. They can be made of almost any hard material, but wood is usually preferred. Couches are normally found in the living room or a studio. They provide for better comfort than a chair or bench. They are produced by experienced carpenters, but anyone can produce a decent enough couch.
Instructions
- 1
Draw the shape of your couch, as you would like it. Make sure the design fits the space available at your house.
2Buy the fabric for your couch. You will be building a 70-inch long couch, so you'll need 11 square yards of upholstery fabric. Buy a roll of 120 feet of spring. Buy foam, batting and stuffing for the couch; the amount required can be determined by a hardware store, according to the materials you get.
3Build the seat of the couch. For this, arrange the wooden boards in a rectangular shape, and use glue and screws to secure the boards together. Place the triangle supports in the corners, and glue them to the boards.
4Repeat step 3, only this time, create the back of the couch. Make sure you attach the back of the couch to the seat with the triangles.
5Build the side arms. For this, make a straight square with the wooden boards, and attach it to the back of the couch. Do this for the other side. Remember that side arms can be whatever size you want them to be; just make sure you secure them correctly to both the back and the seat part. Use thick screws to do this.
6Attach the springs to the back of the seat and to the seat itself. Use the clips to arrange them and the screws to secure the springs to the wood. Cover the springs with cambric fabric, and use the staple gun to secure it.
7Arrange the foam around the arms, and go over it with the batting. Use as much foam as you like to determine the thickness of the cushions.
8Use fabric to cover any exposed areas on the couch, and secure it with the staple gun.
