Activities for Students Learning Microsoft Word 2007

Microsoft produces a new version of Word every few years, improving both the look and functionality of the program. Word 2007 provides users with a streamlined word-processing environment. This version functions on an intuitive tab system, separating controls into groups based on common purpose. (e.g., The "Review" tab houses all of the tools you would use when reviewing a document, such as "Spell Check" and "Word Count.") In-class activities can help students as they adjust to the new look of Word 2007.

Letter

Revive the lost art of letter-writing with this activity. Instruct students to type a letter to a pen pal, classmate or family member. Typing letters builds communication skills while reinforcing word-processing technique. This activity will also familiarize new users with the controls on the "Home" tab.

Visual Aids

Word 2007 allows you to build tables in any document and connects with Excel for easy chart creation. Have students format and print charts to use as visual aids during class presentations. This activity familiarizes students with formatting and print menu options, while reinforcing crucial math concepts.

Cover Sheet

Try using a template when creating your cover page.

Even young students will be able to produce cover pages with Word 2007. Add shapes, color and creative fonts to emphasize the report topic and author. Use covers on reports or as decoration. You can even add digital pictures for a personal touch.

Peer Review

Have students partner up for peer review. Students can share reports or short stories. They will learn how to create, save, share and edit documents. This activity also fosters communication, reading and writing skills. Instruct advanced users to use the built-in "Track Changes" features.

Note-Taking

Combine Internet and word-processing skills with a research activity. Browse the Web while saving notes and bibliographic information in Word 2007. Students can add hyperlinks and use the document as part of an ongoing research project. When they are done, each will have a dated record of their individual search process.
