How to Arrange a Sectional to a Fireplace

Most sectional sofas consist of at least two separate sections -- a long sofa segment and a shorter segment or chaise lounge that form an L-shape when placed together. You can use a sectional to create a cozy seating area around a fireplace, which tends to be a natural focal point in a home. Place furniture in the most intuitive way that doesn't block doors, windows and foot traffic for the most comfortable seating area. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Orient the longest section of your sofa to face the fireplace. Place it several feet away from the fireplace, but not against the wall. Leave a passage to walk behind the couch. Moving furniture away from the walls makes your room more interesting and cozy.

    2

Push the shorter section or chaise portion of the sectional against the long side of the sofa. If your sectional is such that you can choose on which side to place the shorter section, face it toward a secondary focal point of the room, such as a TV or window.

    3

Spread an area rug over the floor in front of the sectional to define the seating area.

    4

Position a coffee table on the rug in front of the sectional. Leave enough leg room around it to comfortably reach each part of the sectional. Make sure the table is at least three feet away from the fireplace for safety.

    5

Place an end table at the end of the long section of the sofa or next to the chaise. Or push a sofa table against the back of one section of the couch as a surface on which to set a lamp or drinks and snacks.

    6

Position a chair opposite the short section of the sofa or at a diagonal, facing both segments of the couch. Remember to keep the chair at a safe distance from the fire.
