A sectional is a two- or three-piece couch, commonly shaped like the letter "L." It can be tricky designing a room when you have one of these sectional couches to work with. The simplest way to put your room together is to start by positioning the couch in the room first, in a functional location, and design around it with tables, an entertainment center, pictures and other accoutrements.
Instructions
- 1
Measure the length of each section of the couch. Measure the various walls of the room between doors or entryways to narrow down which of the walls are long enough to support the length of the couch. Focus on areas where you have corners since the sectional has a corner.
2Position the couch in front of the opposite wall from the largest window in the room. You can also choose an adjacent wall, as long as it provides guests with a view of the window. For instance, if you have a bay window in your living room, choose a wall where anyone sitting on the sectional would have a clear view to gaze out of that scenic window.
3Place the couch either directly against the wall for a small room or closer to the middle of the room from the wall if you have more space. In the case of a larger room, the sectional divides your room so that you have a walkway in front, at the sides and in back.
4Put your entertainment center on a wall adjacent to the main window so that you and guests can watch television or other entertainment while seated on the couch. If the room doesn't have an entertainment center, choose another centerpiece for the focal point of the room to put in its place.
5Position the remaining items in your living room around the sectional couch's location. For instance, you can now place a coffee table in front, end tables on either side of the couch, an attractive painting in back of the longest end of the sectional and a plant near the entertainment center or other focal point of the room.
