Unique Ways to Redo a Sofa

Unique Ways to Redo a Sofa

Even a classic sofa will need a new look every few years. Adding tables, pillows or additional seating can make the sofa look brand new. While a clean, new slipcover might be in order, you can enhance the sofa with just colorful accessories. Every living room space calls for a well-made sofa as the room's focal point. Investing time to make the seating area look cozy will give the whole room a face-lift. Does this Spark an idea?

Order a Slipcover

Buy or sew a slipcover to change the color. Relatively inexpensive slipcovers can be ordered from online companies that provide many shapes and styles. You will need to measure the sofa carefully, but a slipcover often has elastic in various places to provide a very flexible fit. This redo can work for changing a room from a fall color theme to a summer one, for example. Switching the sofa from brown to white can make a big difference in the room overall.

Install Large End Tables

Purchase large end tables to create a more expansive seating footprint. Installing a well-made oak end table on each side of a sofa provides great area for adding lamps and books. A small sofa can sometimes need the extra width of nearby furniture, especially if the room is so large it dwarfs the sofa. You can find affordable end tables at consignment stores. By painting two end tables white, to match a white sofa, you can visually expand the seating area.

Accent with Pillows and Color

Add colorful pillows and an area rug. By using a few large pillows in red or green, for example, you can reinforce the new color with an area rug carrying the same colors in front of the sofa. This additional color can make the whole sofa look brand new, especially if the sofa material is in excellent shape. You can add a couple of colorful upholstered chairs to flank the sofa that expand the space for a cozy feeling, too.

Dress Up the Sofa Back

Cover just the back of a sofa with a cloth throw. If a sofa color clashes with the room, but the sofa is well made, you can add a white wool throw or large afghan to cover most of the back of the sofa. Just purchase a throw that is large enough to tuck down under the pillows. Drape the throw over the back and let it hang down a foot or two. A colorful Spanish poncho or quilt can be used as well.

Frame the Sofa with Greenery

Accent the sofa with plants and screens. Buy a sofa table to fit along the back of a sofa standing in the middle of a room. Containers of greenery, whether real or artificial, can sit on the sofa table to add color and warmth to the space. Buy one or two folding wood or bamboo screens to put in back of the sofa to define the area and provide a background for large plants in containers.
