How to Design Loft Style

How to Design Loft Style

Loft style incorporates hip, urban decor in an open space with soaring ceilings, exposed duct work, brick walls and concrete floors. True lofts are generally urban living spaces in converted warehouses, factories or other commercial buildings. They are large and unpartitioned, requiring the dweller to divide the space into livable areas. If you don't reside in a loft, you can convey loft style anywhere by mixing sleek contemporary furnishings with industrial elements. The challenge is keeping the industrial vibe while making the space comfortable and cozy. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Mimic the look of an exposed brick or stone wall with wallpaper, a faux painting technique or stencils. Exposed brick is typical of loft style.

    2

Expose ductwork or beams in the ceiling. A soaring ceiling with exposed pipes will give the space a warehouse look.

    3

Position sleek modern furniture pieces with clean lines and neutral tones in subareas around the space. Balance the lines and angles by throwing in a curve or two with furnishings such as a semicircular couch, round ottoman or an oval top glass coffee table.

    4

Partition the loft area into sections by placing a shoji screen, open bookcase or other room divider to serve as a partial wall. This allows natural light to flow through the space while providing some privacy and coziness. Cordon off areas for dining, sleeping, entertaining, reading or other activities.

    5

Vary the texture of items in the loft area. Incorporate sleek industrial surfaces such as stainless steel, glass, black granite and chrome. Soften all that gleaming sleekness with plush area rugs, textured throw pillows and billowing sheers at the windows.

    6

Install a mix of industrial style lighting. Examples include pendants over the kitchen island, track lighting in a sitting area and cable mounted lights elsewhere.

    7

Display an oversized modern art piece and pull colors from it to use on accessories and throw pillows. The pops of bright primary color will add interest to all those neutral furnishings.
